In the fifth episode of the second season of Stranger Things – Chapter Five: Dig Dug – the characters continue to grapple with the escalating supernatural events and the looming danger that threatens to destroy them all.
Hopper and Joyce track down the source of the underground tunnels, which leads them to Hawkins Lab, where they discover that the lab was conducting experiments on Eleven’s birth mother. They also find evidence that there is a much larger, interconnected network of tunnels beneath the town.
Mike, Dustin, and Lucas continue to investigate the strange, slug-like creatures that have been appearing around town. They soon realize that the creatures are not from the Upside Down, but something else entirely.
Meanwhile, Will’s visions of the Shadow Monster become more frequent and intense, and he is unable to communicate with his friends. His family seeks the help of Bob, who uses his knowledge of BASIC programming to try to decipher Will’s drawings and clues.
Eleven, still living in secret with Hopper, becomes determined to find her mother, and learns that her mother was subjected to the same experiments as she was. With Hopper’s help, she sets out on a journey to find her mother and uncover the truth about her past.
Finally, the episode ends with the Shadow Monster taking control of Will’s body, and he is seen walking into a trap set by the government agents, who know that he is their only hope to stop the monster.
